October 28, 1805 (Camped in the vicinity of Crates Point, above Rowena, Wasco County, Oregon) " The wind which is the cause of our delay, does not retard the motions of those people at all, as their canoes are calculated to ride the highest waves, they are built of white cedar or pine verry light wide in the middle and tapers at each end, with aperns, and heads of animals carved on the bow..." October 29, 1805 (Camped a short distance above the mouth of Little White Salmon River, Skamania County, Washington) " we set out at day light and proceeded on… The Countrey on each side begin to be thicker timbered with Pine and low white Oake; verry rockey and broken." October 30, 1805 (Camped near Cascade Locks, Oregon on an island. They were just above the Cascades of the Columbia (the Great Shute), now inundated by Bonneville Dam, and remained here until November 1 ) After 15 miles of travel the explorers encamped above the Cascades of the Columbia- ‘Great Shute" : " The day proved wet and disagreeable with Some rain all day… I took two men and walked down three miles to examine the Shute and river below… I found by examonation that we must make a portage of the greater perpotion." October 31, 1805 (Remained in Camp of October 30) Captain Clark set out early in the morning accompanied by Joseph Fields and Cruzatte to explore the "Great Shute" : " the Great Shute which commenced at the Island on which we encamped Continued with great rapidity and force thro a narrow channel… I deturmined to return to Camp 10 miles distance, a remarkable high detached rock stands in a bottom … we call the Beaten rock…" November 1, 1805 (Camp was in Skamania County, Washington, above Bonneville Dam and near the present communities of Fort Rains and North Bonneville.) " we got all our baggage ove the Portage of 940 yards, after which
we go the 4 large Canoes over by Sliping them over the rocks on poles placed
across from one rock to another.. in passing those canoes over the rocks
three of them recived injuries which obliged us to delay to have them
repared."
