Current* - The Missouri, or buffalo currant May 1, 1805 " the wind being favourable we used our sales which carried us on at a great pace untill about 12 OCk. when the wind became so high that the small canoes were unable to proceed; here we spend the ballance of the day*. we sent out some hunters who killed buffaloe, an Elk, a goat and two beaver. game is now abundant." Lewis ballance of the day*. - Roosevelt County, Montana in the vicinity of the later Elkhorn Point. May 2, 1805 " snow which continued to fall until 10 AM. Being about one inch deep… the evening verry cold, Ice freesing to the Ores." Clark May 3, 1805 The morning was windy & cold, 26 above 0. After a late start the explorers came upon an area that had great numbers of porcupines: " This river we call Porcupine* from the great number of those anamals found about it’s mouth. I walked out a little distance and met with 2 porcupines which were feeding on the young willow which grow in great abundance on all the sandbars; this anamal is exceedingly clumsy … " Lewis Porcupine*- Present Poplar River in Roosevelt County, Montana, with the town of Poplar at its mouth. May 4, 1805 " We were detained this morning untill about 9 OCk. in order to repare the rudder irons of the red perogue which were broken last evening in landing... I saw emmence quantities of buffaloe in every direction, having an abundance of meat on hand I passed them without firing on them ... passed several old Indian hunting camps in the course of the day …"
