On July 3, 1806, the Corps of Discovery left  Travelers' Rest.  Captain Lewis and nine men went to pursue a direct route to the Missouri, then explore Maria's river. Captain Clark and the rest of the party went a new route to the Jefferson River, then descended to the Three Forks and then proceeded with a detachment party to explore the Yellowstone, while Sergeant Ordway, with nine men, descended the Missouri.          Map of Routes


 On August 12, 1806 the group was reunited at "Reunion Bay" near New Town, North Dakota. 


On August 17, 1806 Lewis & Clark bid farewell to Sacagawea, paid Toussaint Charbonneau for his services, and began their journey home.


August 15, 1806

"Colter one of our men expressed a desire to join Some trappers who offered to become shearers with him and furnish traps.  the offer was a very advantagious one, to him.  we agreed to allow him the privilage .... we gave Jo Colter some small articles which we did not want." 

August 16, 1806

"We sent for Mr. Jussome* and told him to use his influence to prevail on one of the chiefs to accompany us.  He informed us soon after that the Big White** would go." 

* Rene' Jessaume was hired as a Mandan interpreter on October 27, 1804  to assist Lewis and Clark while they wintered at Fort Mandan.
** Big White - Sheheke- made the journey to Washington was received by President Jefferson and was eventually sent back to St. Louis.  After many difficulties, he was eventually returned to him home late in 1807.

August 17, 1806

" Settled with Touisant Chabono for his services as an enterpreter the price of a horse and lodge purchased of him for public service in all amounting to 500$$ 33 1/3 cents. I offered to take the little son a butifull promising child who is 19 months old to which they both himself & wife were willing provided the child had been weened.  They observed that in one year the boy would be sufficiently old to leave his mother & he would then take him to me if I would be so friendly as to raise the child ... to which I agreed.  we droped down to the Big White Cheifs Mandan village.  he informed me that he was ready , maney of them cried out aloud.  we then saluted them with a gun and set out and proceeded on to Fort Mandan where I landed and went to view the old works the houses except one in the rea was burnt by accident, some pickets were standing in front next to the river.""

August 18, 1806 - Camped a little south of Bismarck, North Dakota

"Soon after we embarked and Indian came running down to the shore , appeared anxious to speak to us.  We went ashore and found it was the brother of Big White, hearing of our departure came to take leave of the chief.  they separted in a most afectionate manner."

August 19, 1806 - Camped about ten miles below the previous camp still in Burleigh County, North Dakota

"Capt. Lewis'es wounds are heeling very fast, I am much in hope of his being able to walk in 8 or 10 days."

August 20, 1806- Camped below the mouth of Spring Creek, Campbell County, South Dakota.

"I observe a great alteration in the Corrent course and appearance of this pt. of the Missouri..  in places where there was Sand bars in the fall o 1804 at this time the main Current passes, and where the current then passed is now a Sand Bar.  Sand bars which were then naked are now covered with willow several feet high."
