Lewis and Clark Trail "Re-live the Adventure"

Welcome to Bismarck/Mandan, North Dakota
A light dusting of snow on the morning of October 21, 1804
signified to Lewis & Clark that winter had arrived early.
The "Corps of Discovery" built a
fort nearby the Mandan and Hidatsa villages.

While wintering with the natives, the expedition encountered many "Firsts":
from partaking in the ceremonial "Buffalo Dance" -
Christmas party - northern lights - bitter cold temperatures -
to meeting the most influential woman that would accompany
Lewis & Clark on their westward journey.
Her name,
Sakakawea
(meaning "bird woman" in the language of her Hidatsa captors)
served as an interpreter, guide, teacher, and even an ambassador.

October 14, 1804 - April 7, 1805
