Nebraska fall foliage tour

Combine History and Adventure - Explore the 110 mile drive along the Rivers of Lewis and Clark - the Missouri and Platte.

1) Bellevue - Site of Children's Lewis & Clark Interpretive Art Wall, Haworth Park.  Over 700 tiles of children's art is on display from 10 different states. Include a VISIT to Sarpy County Museum.  Proceed on 19 miles to Gretna.

The great Platte River - Missouri Equator.  Field Notes from the Journals of Lewis and Clark. On July 21, 1804 -  After covering 14 miles in the rain the party reached the Great River Platte.  The highlands which they had seen on the south for the last 8 or 10 miles stopped abruptly.  Captains Lewis and Clark ascended the Platte for about one mile, reported the current very rapid and divided into a number of channels, none of which were deeper than 5 or 6 feet.  The Captains estimated the Platte River to be about 600 yards wide at its mouth and about that many miles from St. Louis. 

2) Gretna - Schramm Park State Recreation Area.  Site of the state's first fish hatchery, now a museum.  Fall hours Wed - Monday - 10 AM - 4:30 PM.   Proceed on 18 miles to Valley.

3)  Valley - Two Rivers State Rec Area  has signs detailing the historic location of the Otoe Indian villages that Lewis and Clark visited.  Proceed on 27 miles to Blair.

4)  Blair - On August 4, 1804, the Corps camped up river near the town of Blair.  Historical markers.   Proceed on 10 miles to Fort Calhoun.

5)   Fort Calhoun - Fort Atkinson State Historical Park. Lewis and Clark counseled with the  Missouri's and Otoe's on August 3, 1804. Commemorative statue and historic Fort.  Proceed on 18 miles to Omaha.

6) Omaha - Father Flanagan's Boys Town -  Discover the World's Largest Stamp Ball!  For more information call: 402-498-1140.  Proceed on 18 miles to Bellevue.

To complete your tour, take-in Fontenelle Forest Nature Center.   17 miles of trails lead into woods and across marshes and prairie.  Birders see up to 250 species throughout the year and in the fall geese and ducks migrate through.  An interpretive center includes exhibits and wildlife information.
