WELCOME TO THE COLUMBIA RIVER
EXHIBITION |
Lewis & Clark: Scientists in Buckskins
CREHST Museum (Richland, Washington) has opened a new Lewis and
Clark exhibit with lots of hands-on activities. Write with a
quill
(feather) dipped in ink! Measure the height of a star with an
astrolabe! Touch furs! Smell the plants
Lewis and Clark studied!
The exhibit features the science that President Jefferson
instructed Lewis and Clark to investigate as they explored the West.
It covers their work in identifying new plants
and animals, keeping weather records, surveying the minerals, and
documenting cultural and linguistic information about the
Native
American tribes they encountered in addition to mapping the new
lands west of the Mississippi River.
An evening camp scene shows the exact night sky they camped under
on the Snake and Columbia Rivers. You can sight on stars in this sky
using a modern version of an astrolabe. Low tech compared to a GPS
but it operates on the same principles!
This facility
also features a variety of two- and three-dimensional
exhibits and displays. Visitors will be entertained with interactive,
hands-on displays and activities. From primitive irrigation systems to
the development and use of robotics, you will enjoy a fascinating
journey through the unique Columbia Basin region. In one afternoon, you
can:
-
Travel the years from prehistoric time through the nuclear
age
-
Discover the unique history and geology of the Columbia River
-
Uncover the secrets of nuclear technology and molecular
science
-
Encounter the vast agricultural fields of the Columbia Basin
-
Explore hydroelectric power and Hanford Reach history.
