William Clark inherited York from his father and
York accompanied Clark
on the Lewis and Clark Trail journey.
In
present day South Dakota, York
astounded the Arikara's with his size
and skin color.
"The Indians much asstonished at my
Black servent
and Call him the big medison,
this nation never saw a black man
before." Captain Clark
Reaching the Pacific Ocean,
York was given the right
to vote, November 24, 1805, as to the location of where the
Expedition would build their winter quarters.
At
the White House on January 17, 2001, in the
closing days of the Clinton Administration, it was decided by the federal
government that certain “wrongs” to York
should be rectified: York – never a
official member of the famed Corps of
Discovery – should be made honorary
